Landman – Independent

Carson is a 2006 junior college graduate of the New Mexico Military Institute and a 2009 graduate of Texas Tech University where he earned his BBA degree in Energy Commerce. After interning with Continental Land Services in the summer of 2008, Carson began his professional career in 2009 with ConocoPhillips in Houston where he worked Gulf Coast, Haynesville, and South Texas properties. In 2010, ConocoPhillips transferred him to Midland to work its Bakken and Niobrara drilling programs. After five years with Henry Resources, Carson is now an independent landman. He is member of PBLA and AAPL.

Clay Whitehead, CPL – First Vice President – Programs
Landman – CrownQuest Operating, LLC

Clay graduated from Texas Tech University with a Petroleum Land Management degree in December of 2006.  During school Clay did an internship for BP in Houston Texas.  He then began his professional career after graduation with ConocoPhillips, working the Barnett Shale from their Midland office.  In August of 2008, he took a position at Concho Resources as a landman on the Texas Asset team.  He spent the next four years working on the Texas, New Mexico, and Exploration teams at Concho.  In August of 2012, Clay took a landman position at CrownQuest Operating, LLC, primarily working the Wolfberry play.  Clay and his wife, Leslie, have been married eight years.  They have two daughters, Delaney and Kanon.

Nick Hanna, RPL – Second Vice President, Membership
Land Lead – Chevron USA Inc.

Nick grew up at Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch in the Texas Panhandle.  He graduated from Texas Tech University in 2010, earning his BBA in Energy Commerce.  After graduating from Texas Tech, he began his career as an in-house Landman working for Southwestern Energy in Conway, Arkansas.  During his time with Southwestern, Nick worked on the team responsible for acquisition of the surface agreements necessary to facilitate the rapid development of the Fayetteville Shale.  Nick relocated to Midland to join Chevron in November of 2011.  During his time with Chevron, Nick has supported assets in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado.  He has worked in both Base Operations and Asset Development.  Nick currently works as the Land Team Lead – Permian AD Surface.  Nick and his wife, Rhegan, have been married for eight years and have been blessed with two wonderful children, Braxton (6) and Korbyn (3).

Tip Kirwan, CPL – Secretary
Senior Landman – Legacy Reserves, LP 

Tip Kirwan works for Legacy Reserves as a Senior Landman. He began his career as a Petroleum Landman in 1979.  He has worked as an in-house and a field landman and has performed every type of land duty, working in many parts of the U. S.  Tip earned his C.P.L. in 1989.  He earned an A.A. in Business from Schreiner College, a B. A. in History, his B. S. in Earth Science, each from University of Texas – Permian Basin.  He also holds a teaching certificate.  He played tennis for Schreiner, Howard Payne, and Texas Tech.  Tip has been married to Brenda Ouzts for 34 years. Their son, Taylor, works for Texas Tech and is married to Faith.  Tip has been active in politics, church, and Scouts.  He joined the AAPL in 1983 and has been a proud member of the PBLA since 1981.

Jance Floyd, J.D. – Director, Clay Shoot
Attorney-at-Law, Perry & Shields, LLP 

Jance E. Floyd focuses his practice in the Oil and Gas Section of Perry Shields LLP conducting consultation and transactional matters, along with title examination.  Mr. Floyd has extensive experience in oil and gas title issues, as he has spent numerous years in the Permian Basin as both a landman and attorney gaining practice experience in the industry to better serve his clients.  Mr. Floyd graduated with a degree in Theatre from Lyon College (BA 2007), and with a Juris Doctorate from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law (J.D. 2011).  He is a Board Member of the Permian Basin Landman’s Association, a member of Oil, Gas, and Energy Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, and American Association of Professional Landmen.  In his free time, Jance enjoys reading, watching copious amounts of great television, and serving at Mission Dorado Baptist Church where he is a deacon.

Chris Harrell – Director, Clay Shoot
Landman – Pioneer Natural Resources, Inc.

Chris grew up in Beaumont, Texas and graduated in his hometown from Lamar University.  His career as a Landman began in 1996 working for a small broker in his hometown.  He was active throughout Texas and Louisiana, from the Eagleford Shale in South Texas to the Barnett and Haynesville Shale plays in East Texas and North Louisiana.  In 2012, Chris left East Texas and moved to the Permian Basin where he began work as a direct contract Landman for Pioneer Natural Resources USA, Inc.   Chris is currently employed as a Staff Surface Operations Coordinator on Pioneer’s Water Management Team where he plays an instrumental role in securing the necessary water to fulfill Pioneer’s busy drilling schedule.  Chris is member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen, as well as the Permian Basin Landmen’s Association where he has served as a committee member on the Eric Hanson Memorial Clay Shoot event for the last two years.  Chris is a self-professed “jack of all trades” and enjoys working in his shop on various projects as well as hunting, fishing, and cooking.  Chris and his wife, Katie, have been married for six years and live in Midland with their son, Everett Hoyt, and their golden retriever, Merle.

Caleb Hopson – Director, Newsletter
Landman – BC Operating, Inc.

Caleb graduated from Texas Tech University in 2010, earning his BBA in Energy Commerce. After graduating from Texas Tech, he began his career as a Landman for Concho Resources Inc.  Caleb joined the BC Operating team in 2014, and after they sold their assets to Marathon Oil Company in 2017, he decided to pursue his own dreams and became independent in the oil and gas business.  He is a member of AAPL, and became a member of the PBLA in 2011.  Caleb and his wife, Baleigh, have been married five years and were recently blessed with their first baby girl, Knoxley Hopson, in December 2017.

Austin Kuenstler, RPL – Director, Clay Shoot
Senior Landman – Concho Resources Inc.

Austin was raised in Burnet, Texas.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma.  He began his career in 2009 as a contract Landman working the Haynesville Shale in East Texas and the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas before moving to the Permian Basin in 2011.  He worked the next six years as a direct contract Landman for Pioneer Natural Resources USA, Inc., where he was involved in multiple facets of drilling preparation and later worked on the trades team. In 2017, Austin joined Concho Resources Inc. as a Senior Landman where he helps to manage their Southern Delaware Basin assets.

Austin is a Registered Petroleum Landman, member of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen, and a board member for the Permian Basin Landmen’s Association.  He will serve as the Director of the Eric Hanson Memorial Clay Shoot in September 2018.  Austin enjoys traveling, hunting, playing golf, and watching college football.  Boomer Sooner! He lives with his wife, Kristin, and Jack Russell Shortie, Brooke.

Becca Lucas, CPL – Director
Landman – Anadarko Petroleum Company

Becca is a Midwesterner who found her way to East Texas, where she started her career as a field landman in Tyler in 2006.  After working the Haynesville for several years, she moved to Pennsylvania, where she lived for two winters before getting back to Texas.  She started with Anadarko in 2012 working Marcellus and Eaglebine, and is currently working the Delaware Basin as a land supervisor over North Loving County.  Becca graduated with an MBA from University of Texas – Tyler, and became a Certified Professional Landman in 2016.  She is currently a member of AAPL and Women’s Energy Network, and a former board member of the North Houston Association of Professional Landmen.  She and her dog, Wrigley, are the biggest Cubs fans in Midland.

Bryce R. Winters, CPL – Director, Fundraising

Bryce is a Texas native who grew up around the Oil and Gas industry in South Texas.  After high school and during college he spent weekends and summers working on well locations, monitoring flowbacks and other completion procedures.  After graduating the University of Texas – San Antonio with a Biology degree he worked as a research scientist until he found an opportunity to train as a field landman in 2005 with Dudley Land.  In 2010 he became an employee of Dudley Land Company in their Haynesville Shale office located in Nacogdoches, TX.  In 2012 Bryce moved to Denver, CO to oversee Dudley Land’s Rockies office until moving to Midland in 2016 to open and operate Dudley Land’s Permian office.  Bryce is a CPL with wide0ranging land experience, including directly working or managing crews on projects in thirteen states and throughout all the productive areas of Texas.  Bryce is a current member of the AAPL and PBLA and a former member of ETAPL , DAPL (Denver), and WAPL.  Bryce has been married to his very patient wife, Karissa, for ten years and they have two children, Presley (7) and Bowen (4).   

Derek Whiting, Director, Christmas Party & Shrimp Boil

Derek is a six-year veteran of the United States Marine Corp and a 2013 graduate of the University of Texas – Permian Basin where he earned his BBA in Business Management.  He began his professional career as a Midland and Permian Basin-focused Landman in 2013 at Reliable Land Services.  In 2014, he joined Eight Energy where he excelled in running title, leasing, and negotiating contracts prior to deciding to go independent in 2016.  As an independent, he acted as a broker, created leasehold positions, and purchased minerals.  In August of 2017, he accepted his current position with Piedra Resources working in the Acquisitions and Land Department.  Derek is a member of YPE, PBLA, DAPL, AAPL and serves on the City of Midland ZBA Board. 

Jason South, CPL – Immediate Past President
Vice President – Business Development and Land – Prime Rock Resources, LLC  

Jason serves as Vice President of Business Development and Land at Prime Rock Resources, LLC. Prior to his current position, he served as Land Manager for Endurance Resources LLC where he was responsible for all land and business development activities and helped navigate the successful sale of all of Endurance’s assets.  Jason has over twelve years of experience in the oil and gas industry and has held positions of increasing responsibility with Pioneer Natural Resources, Chevron U.S.A. Inc., and Shaw Interests, Inc.

Jason is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing.  He is a Certified Professional Landman and member of the AAPL.  Jason and his wife, Laura, have been married nine years and have three kids, Margo (6), Robert (3) and Hallie (1).

Danny Kidwell, CPL/ESA – AAPL Director – Region V
Senior Staff Landman – Concho Resources Inc.

Mr. Kidwell began his career as an Independent Landman in January, 1980, after graduating from The University of Texas in December, 1979.  He worked 6 years for Cities Service Oil Co./Oxy Petroleum as a Landman, 4 years as the Landman for Seaboard Oil Company, and 3 years as a Landman for BTA Oil Producers, before returning to work as an Independent Landman.  In 2011, he joined ConocoPhillips in its Rocky Mountain – Montana division as a Senior Landman and in 2013 became Senior Land Advisor for Energen Resources Corporation.  He is now a Senior Landman in the New Mexico Basin for Concho Resources Inc.  Danny has a total of 38 years of experience as a Landman.  He has been married to his wife, Laurie, for 27 years and they have two sons, Randy (25), an engineer in Midland, and Ryan (21) a Junior at TCU.
